Often Forgotten Essential: A music stand is one of those accessories that's easy to overlook, but it makes a huge difference to your practice sessions. Having your music, practice pad exercises, or even a tablet at the right height and angle improves your posture and makes learning much more comfortable.

What's in a Standard Drum Kit: A typical 5-piece acoustic kit includes a bass drum (kick), snare drum, two rack toms, and one floor tom. You'll also need cymbals: a hi-hat pair, ride cymbal, and crash cymbal. Most kits also come with essential hardware like stands, pedals, and sometimes a drum throne (stool).
Buying Advice: There are many excellent manufacturers making quality drums at all price points. Rather than recommending specific models, I've listed trusted brands and reputable retailers below to help you find the right kit for your budget and needs. Don't forget to check the secondhand market too - you can often find great deals on quality acoustic kits.
Understanding Drum Kit Components
I recommend starting with a standard 5-piece acoustic drum kit, which consists of:
- Drums: Bass drum (kick), snare drum, 2 rack toms, 1 floor tom
- Cymbals: Hi-hat pair, ride cymbal, crash cymbal
- Hardware: Cymbal stands, hi-hat stand, snare stand, bass drum pedal, drum throne (seat)
Important: Many entry-level complete kits include basic cymbals and all necessary hardware, making them perfect for beginners. However, some kits may not include a drum throne (seat), so check what's included before purchasing.
While kits come in various configurations (4-piece, 6-piece, etc.), the standard 5-piece setup is ideal for learning proper technique and covers all the fundamentals.

Electric Kit Recommendations: Alesis offers budget-friendly options perfect for beginners and younger students. For a step up in quality, Yamaha DTX series provides excellent value. Roland also offer excellent quality electric drums.
My main recommendation: Having a proper kick pedal with a kick drum pad (rather than a foot switch) is a significant advantage for developing proper technique in the long run.
Important: Electric drums need wired headphones or a speaker to work properly. You will also need a stool if the package you choose doesn't include one.
